Simon Horrocks, EMEA VP for NCCM products - Infoblox

Thursday 21 October 13:50 PM - 14:20 PM

Theatre: Network Optimisation

"Most network managers are aware that 80% of network outages are caused by change. What they don't know is perhaps even more simple :- When a change is made, was it in keeping with best practices?- Did the change introduce a gremlin that will cause an outage in a few days' time ?- Regardless of whether it was a 'good quality' change or not, what was the impact - did it actually make things better, or worse?"

Bolton Wanderers - Mimecast

Mimecast UK & Europe

Premier League Football club Bolton Wanderers migrated its email management from individual point solutions to a unified, web-based email system from Mimecast. The move was prompted by a desire to reduce the time involved in managing email quarantines, provide a continuous always-on, secure email service, and archive all email communications in a cost-effective manner.

“We carried out an extensive evaluation of all the main storage vendors and even beyond that,”
says Paul Wooler (British Library Technical Analyst). “Both the DOM Programme and the Microsoft Digitisation Project require that we keep more than one copy of the data, replicated between our sites at Boston Spa in Yorkshire, St Pancras in London, and a third site at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.”

The British Library and S3, entered into detailed discussions to establish the library’s
precise needs and budget. As a result, the library has now standardised on Nexsan
SATABeasts as its storage system of choice, with twelve currently in action, which includes
six for the Microsoft digitisation and four for the DOM System.

Lloyds TSB Products and Markets found itself not just moving to its new HQ at 10 Gresham
Street in the City, but also with a pressing need to provide an off-site data back-up solution in
its out-of-town DR site.

The task? To help them re-design and integrate their storage and back-up systems.

A cumbersome, costly and risk-prone procedure was crying out for a solution when S3’s assessment of the situation was invited. In close discussion with Colin Everett, Head of IT Strategy and Architecture at Lloyds TSB Products & Markets, it became clear that the primary drivers for the project were manageability and scalability though, as with any major project, cost effectiveness remained a factor.

“Thanks to the team at S3, we have the confidence that our new flagship building at 10 Gresham Street and our state-of-the-art trading floor are complemented by the perfect
technological solution. It gives us precisely what Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets needed:
cutting-edge technology for our back-up and contingency operations.

According to industry analysts, email volume in organizations is growing by more than 30% annually, and the average user receives 7MB of data per day via email. As a result of this growth, the handling of email has become a critical business, IT and regulatory issue – driving
the need for email archiving solutions. Most organizations looking for an email archiving solution are motivated by four reasons: mailbox/server management, compliance/records retention, eDiscovery/litigation support, and knowledge management/IP protection. In addition to these challenges, IT departments want to know how to control costs of the email environment, while keeping important data accessible for business, legal and regulatory users.

Today’s litigious and regulatory environments mean organizations are obligated to electronically store information to support discovery and disclosure requests. Organizations that archive email in a ‘fractured’ environment risk losing control and may struggle to produce evidential-quality email evidence.

Companies have been struggling for years with the dilemma of how to manage their vast information stores so that the right information is available to run the business and information that no longer has value is discarded. This paper addresses typical Information Governance challenges and discusses a framework for addressing these challenges and some of the resulting benfits.

Few businesses could function without email, and email provides a critical coordination tool during an outage, yet due to the cost and complexity of providing true email continuity many businesses do not have business continuity plans that protect email adequately. Continuity and archiving services may prove more cost effective for email than highavailability clustering, especially when considered in the light of continued governance, risk mitigation and compliance.

You can’t aff ord to ignore email archiving, security, internal policy or regulatory requirements,
but can you aff ord to keep paying for it as multi ple systems on top of your email system? When you add up the full price tag for your email environment, from server to soft ware to risk management and staff costs, it becomes clear why running everything in-house can mean you spend far more of your budget on maintenance than innovati on.

The regulatory environment means that monitoring what information leaves your organization is as vital as protecting it from external attacks. Email is one of the most likely routes by which data may leak, maliciously or more often accidentally. A successful Data Leak Prevention system will address the issue of email by policy, in a way that integrates with the systems your business has in place to address governance, risk and compliance rather than through a series of standalone tools.

In September 2009, Mimecast commissioned Forrester Consulting to examine the total economic impact and potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying its Unified Email Management solution. Mimecast’s solution is a software-as-a-service enterprise email management solution that complements the client’s existing on-premise email server. The Mimecast cloud service provides a comprehensive solution that archives all email, ensures continuity of email service, improves the eDiscovery process, and allows the application of consistent security and policy settings.

This study illustrates the financial impact of using the Mimecast service in a $1 billion business services firm with 5,000 users that operates a large headquarters and two branch offices overseas.

Threat Migration from the Cloud

Mimecast UK & Europe

You can’t treat security as a set of isolated point systems. That’s true of your business information in general and of your email architecture specifically. Protecting information is one side of the coin; making it available and accessible is the other and if you do both right you can improve productivity as well as avoid risk. The cloud isn’t just the most effective place to secure email, before any threats or intruders ever reach your network; it’s also the most efficient. Cloud-based email services can offer full protection with the promise of availability and reliability too.

Converged Infrastructure:
A converged infrastructure enables an organisation to do more with fewer resources. Converged Infrastructure solutions drive business agility, innovation and performance improvements, while reducing risk, complexity and cost.
IT proliferation has stretched many businesses to breaking point, and business agility is severely constrained. Converged infrastructure, a holistic solution that enables all end user sub systems to work in tandem on a single IP network, offers new and more effective ways of working which address the following typical challenges:

• Escalating IT management and administration costs
• A desire to move mission-critical environments to standards-based infrastructure
• Limited datacenter space; need to improve server consolidation, virtualisation, and utilisation
• Risk associated with older legacy systems
• A need to grow and scale capacity in line with shrinking IT budgets
• Break free of proprietary solutions to achieve true inter-operability through the adoption of open industry standards
• An approach to unifying multiple communications methods: voice, e-mail, messaging, video etc
