The London Borough of Hillingdon’s IT team approached Fordway to find an effective and greener way to handle the Borough’s rapidly growing data storage requirements. They needed a solution that would provide effective data prioritisation and management and drive down costs, while also providing increased resilience and reducing power consumption. The Borough’s existing five year old storage area network (SAN) could not handle the expanding level of data, and the associated IT infrastructure was unable to support the IT team as it struggled to manage growth and prioritise data manually.

Fordway designed and implemented a migration to a new storage area network (SAN) solution combined with a virtual server environment. This has provided substantial cost savings, improved data prioritisation and an effective business continuity solution. As well as providing disaster recovery for the Borough, the solution has been extended to provide disaster recovery for the local health authority, Hillingdon Primary Care Trust, and will enable the Borough to recover its operating costs in the not-for-profit agreement with the trust.

Allied Irish Bank counts on VMware for cost savings and energy efficiency.

Allied Irish Bank (AIB) is Ireland’s largest financial institution with primary operations in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Poland and the United States. The bank’s Republic of Ireland and Great Britain operations are based in Dublin, where two data centres host its Windows server estate. Overall AIB supports a number of central departments such as credit operations, finance and leasing, cards services, and home mortgages as well Group support and head office functions such as finance, Human Resources and IT. In 2007, AIB had almost 600 Windows servers in place, supporting around 8,000 users. During the past two years, the bank had been forced to deploy between 100 and 200 new servers per year to keep up with demand for new services and applications across
the business. This strategy had led to significant ongoing management overheads, as well as increasing hardware and power bills.

BRITA was looking for a way to resolve mailbox size issues and stop dependence on PST files. Capacity within Exchange and the use of PST files was becoming an issue. Like so many others, their email users had started to rely on them because of lack of server space. Many organizational email systems are peppered with PST files as a way to overcome mailbox quota limitations.

Prior to the installation of an archiving solution, users were restricted to an individual mailbox size of 5GB. Users were alerted when their mailboxes became oversized and IT then had to take remedial action with the individual user, cleaning up and deleting old emails. Frequently to avoid the restrictions, users would take matters into their own hands, randomly transferring email into PST files. This caused issues as Microsoft Exchange only supports up to 2GB PST files, and if files were left open throughout scheduled backups, not only could the file become corrupted, open PST files could trigger the backup to crash. In this litigious environment, backups could not be left to chance.

ATA over Ethernet is the simplest possible way of sharing a disk drive through a network. The communication that would take place between the motherboard and IDE disk drive is arranged into data packets and sent through the Ethernet.
