10.30am-11.00am: Speaking Slot – Symantec

V-Ray – The End of the Dark Ages of Virtualization, Jason Dowzell1

Symantec’s V-Ray technology allows organisations to see what’s inside virtual machines (VMs) so they can secure, protect, backup and recover both virtual and physical machines.
Extensive virtualization is just a fact of life in IT today and it is no longer just on the periphery. With an increasing number of complex workloads wrapped up in VMs, customers of all sizes are challenged to maintain the same degree of security and protection from their virtual environments as they get from their physical environment whilst leveraging the benefits brought about by virtualization. Attaining the service levels for these business systems requires a high degree of visibility into virtual environments.
Find out from this session how by using our V-Ray technology you can securely protect both virtualized & physical environments, quickly recover data from disk or tape, auto-discover new VMs and many more exciting enhancements from the leader in VMWare backup.

19th and 20th October
Security and Governance Theatre

11.50am-12.20pm:No Compromises: Virtualization Security

You will learn:
* The security strategies needed to defend a virtual environment
* The security solutions needed to defend your virtual platform
* What existing security systems can be redeployed for virtual IT
* What attack strategies cybercriminals are using against v-systems
* How to raise your security game in an evolving virtual world

19th and 20th October

Storage and Information management Theatre
11.50am-12.20pm: Get the Private Cloud You Want, from the Infrastructure You’ve Got, Simon Wallace

There are many benefits in Private Cloud Architectures for Enterprise IT environments, but how do you get there?  Transforming your existing DataCentre to a Private Cloud is a complex endeavour and involves changes to operational processes and attitudes as well as changes to technology.  And changing your technology infrastructure isn’t always easy.  A “Rip-and-Replace” strategy may be the simplest but this is often cost-prohibitive.  A “Transformation” strategy gives you the ability to re-use your existing hardware platforms and migrate to a Cloud architecture in a phased approach and within timescales that make sense for your business. This session will help you understand the key attributes of a Resilient Private Cloud, how Cloud Architectures can be built on existing hardware, and the path to transforming your existing DataCentre at a pace that is right for your business.

Government Authority Reduces Storage Pool by a Factor of 20 using PureDisk

A public authority providing public services for the financial and commercial heart of Britain needs to be certain its data is safe and protected from disaster. And as is ever the case in public services, it needs to be cost-effective. So when the City of London was looking for a deduplication solution to replace an Asigra televaulting solution, it turned to Symantec. Complementing an existing Symantec NetBackup implementation,Symantec NetBackup PureDisk is deployed to make disk backups more cost efficient by eliminating the backup of duplicate data. Used in support of both remote site and data center deduplication, NetBackup PureDisk has enabled the City of London to reduce the volume of data backed up in the main production data center by a factor of 20―and by a factor of 42 in the disaster recovery environment. It is also providing financial savings relating to tape management and offsite storage.

Symantec Helps Major U.K. Healthcare Provide Reduce its IT Security Costs by 25 Percent

‘Symantec 25’ aims to help public sector organizations achieve up to a 25 percent reduction on their IT security and infrastructure software acquisition and support costs. And that intent holds true—to the exact percentage—at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust in the U.K. The healthcare Trust is replacing an unwieldy and expensive collection of security technologies with a streamlined and integrated suite of Symantec security technologies, including Symantec Data Loss Prevention™ and Symantec™ Protection Suite. The solution is expected to lower the cost of managing security by 25 percent, while simultaneously enabling the Trust to reliably identify, monitor, and protect its data. The Symantec solution is also helping to educate thousands of end users on the perils of unguarded technology and prevent Trust staff from sending unencrypted sensitive information via email. Ultimately, improved IT security will also provide enhanced IT compliance and avoid enforcement action by The Information Commissioner’s Office for any data breach.

Securing the Cloud for the Enterprise

The arrival of cloud computing is changing the landscape for information technology (IT) more completely than has anytrend or innovation since the first commercial use of the Internet, 15 years ago. Cloud computing redirects energy andresources that IT has traditionally consumed in operations and maintenance, turning it toward innovation that servesbusiness—and lowers costs. The various approaches to taking full advantage of the cloud include public or private modelsof software, platform, and infrastructure services. These cloud approaches to information technology offer solutions to thechallenges presented by device proliferation, the exponential growth in volumes of data, and the accelerated changesdemanded by the increasingly fast pace of business.

U.K. Cost of a Data Breach

Symantec Corporation and the Ponemon Institute proudly present 2010 Annual Study: U.K. Cost of a Data Breach, our fourth annual study concerning the cost of data breach incidents for U.K. companies. Ponemon Institute research indicates that data breaches continue to have serious financial consequences for organisations. This year, multiple factors apparently confirm that data breach mitigation and regulatory compliance drive companies’ data breach costs– and, in some cases, may lead them to pay much more than they would otherwise.

Key Considerations in Modernizing Your Backup and Deduplication Solutions

There is a definite need for better data backup solutions in today’s enterprise data centers. The question is whether to continue withsoftware-only backup and deduplication solutions, or to make the move to a purpose-built backup appliance with deduplication capabilities.Clearly, the simplicity and completeness of the appliance model are attractive, but what other less-obvious considerations should weigh intothe decision? This paper provides a structured approach to assessing the advantages of the appliance model. It summarizes the trends thathave made modernizing backup and deduplication an urgent priority, the key requirements for solution offerings, and the unique capabilitiesof Symantec NetBackup™ appliances in delivering a simple, complete, and cost-effective solution.
