NCE Case Study: The Royal Bolton Hospital NHS Trust

For Brett Walmsley (Systems & Network Manager, Royal Bolton Hospital) and his IT team, the main business driver for the integration of VMware (as is typical with many organisations) was the consolidation of the servers. Being an IT Department in an NHS environment, Brett had to deal with a number of user groups, who, (through the requirements of the application) needed to store records to their own dedicated server. This demand for storage was a huge burden on space, not to mention time, power consumption and resource. Most servers were out of warranty and the costs to refresh the hardware would have placed substantial strain on the IT team’s allocated budget – something that is heavily scrutinised in the Public Sector.
