Use Case Comparison of Type-1 vs. Type-2 Client Hypervisors
Comparing the VMWare View Model to NxTop Type-1 HypervisorVMWare View is a powerful solution for VDI, however when it comes to offline operation its solution is a ‘Type 2 Hypervisor’. In simple terms, this means that the base OS of the machine (e.g. Windows) runs as normal, but the virtual machine that the company provides to the end user runs on top of that OS.
NxTop uses a ‘Type 1 Hypervisor’ meaning that there is no Base OS to worry about. A very thin layer sits between the Virtual OS (the Guest) and the hardware itself making sure that the greatest proportion of the resources are available to run the guest OS rather than being taken by the large OS normally seen with Type 2 Hypervisor implementations.
Both models are valid for particular purposes and the sections in this document analyse some of these. MarXtar provides a short conclusion. Both VMWare and NxTop have specific technical features that are not mentioned on this document so that it is kept brief and focus is on the main use cases.

Using the Latest in Hypervisor Technology to More Effectively Manage Desktops
IDC WhitepaperAdapted from Virtualized Client Computing Private Vendor Overview: Driving Innovation AroundEndpoint Virtualization by Michael Rose and Ryan Patterson, IDC #211492
This paper examines Virtual Computer, a desktop management vendor whose product leverages a bare-metal PC hypervisor in order to provide management capabilities that would not otherwise be available in a desktop management platform. The paper considers the value proposition of Virtual Computer's product, the company's business model, and the dynamics of the market in which Virtual Computer competes.

Virtual Desktop Benefits Without the InfrastructureVDI offers many benefits by applying virtualization technology to desktops. Some of the big benefits include manageability, security, and data protection, but not all approaches to VDI are the same...
Server-hosted VDI requires significant investment in servers, storage, and networking because the desktop workload must be run on the servers and then communicated to the user over the network. With NxTop the virtualized workload runs on the client, and only the management functions are performed on the server, so a single management server can support over 1000 end-points.

3 - LANDesk Application Virtualisation
Science Fiction Meets RealityScience Fiction Meets Reality
Imagine being able to run an application without ever having to install it. Then see yourself doing it with no preinstalled client software and running from any LAN, WAN, USB, or CD-ROM drive with zero footprint on the host PC.
Science fiction? Hardly. It’s LANDesk® Application Virtualisation.
Deliver Fully Tested Applications the First Time
LANDesk Application Virtualisation lets you quickly deliver fully tested applications to targeted PCs the first time, while minimising application conflicts and lowering support and regression-testing costs. You can also reduce OS migration risks with true isolation for testing applications and different OSs—including Windows 7—before implementing anything. It even boosts security by letting you transparently run applications in user mode on locked-down PCs.
And for those organisations with lots of nodes, LANDesk Application Virtualisation fully integrates with our management suite so you can deploy packages to thousands of computers in under an hour.
Enterprise Benefits
LANDesk Application Virtualisation gives you:
- Clientless, conflict-free application deployment and rollback saves you countless hours
- Fully tested applications to end users; cutting support costs and reducing regression testing
- Minimal application conflicts
- No client or server components to manage or maintain
- Ability to transparently run applications in user mode on locked-down PCs
- True isolation for testing that minimises OS migration risks and hassles

7 - Veloxum for Enterprise
The Easy Way to Increase Capacity Without Adding HardwareVeloxum automates optimising both physical and virtual (VMware) server settings using its patent-pending Active Continuous Optimisation (ACO) process. Better infrastructure utilisation yields higher guest:host ratios, faster processing and a reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), with customers saving up to 50% on server and virtualisation infrastructure.
IT organisations face an unfolding crisis that limits their ability to deliver applications across the enterprise. Their top priorities – data center centralisation, virtualisation and collaboration – are cost-saving measures that negatively impact server performance and capacity, and saturate network bandwidth, creating an expanding drag on application performance. IT must find a way to resolve these issues before they can improve application performance across the enterprise, but how?
Veloxum's Enterprise software, with its patent-pending Active Continuous Optimisation (ACO) process, attacks this problem head-on. ACO improves server performance and utilisation, and in some cases, generates order-of-magnitude increases in both. The more complex the system, usually the more it can benefit from Veloxum. For instance, Veloxum solutions include virtualised and accelerated systems. Veloxum’s ACO solution is a rational alternative to adding servers, to upgrading bandwidth or to tolerating declining application performance.
