Lifeline project finds IGEL units simple to configure and easy to manage
When the Lifeline Project was set-up in Hackney, the organisation inherited an ageing building with no IT infrastructure. “In order to get our service up and running as quickly as possible, it was essential to find an IT solution that was going to be fast, secure and reliable,” said Jackie Kennedy, Services Director, of the Lifeline Project. The charity needed the IT infrastructure to be installed as quickly as possible to ensure they could begin their work as projected. The system needed to be secure because sensitive, confidential records would be maintained. The solution had to be reliable because the charity ensures every possible penny is spent on helping the young people of the area and therefore there was little opportunity to have IT support within the organisation. And finally, as staff were often busy out of the office, the charity needed a solution where people could access their desktop remotely, wherever they may be. The solution After assessing the options, the charity turned to Alchemy Systems and its hosted Virtual Open Desktop solution with IGEL Universal Desktop thin clients to meet its needs.

Salvation Army turns to IGEL for IT to help homeless back to work
The IT room at the hostel is an important facility for residents to help them find work and apply for jobs as well as a connection to the outside world via the internet. But the 10 PCs in the room were regularly failing and the time taken-up in administration was rising rapidly. “We needed to upgrade the facility and we had a number of important criteria,” explained Captain Russell. “The new IT room had to be simple to set-up and administer, as cost effective as possible and secure. With many of the residents having limited IT skills, it was important to be able to lockdown the desktops to prevent anyone accidently altering the settings.” After taking advice that a thin client solution running open source, licence-free software might be a cost-effective solution for the hostel, Captain Russell googled thin clients and came up with several suppliers, including IGEL. After testing a trial unit from IGEL, Captain Howard decided that IGEL would be their preferred supplier for Booth House.

Elizabeth Finn - Right at home with IGEL
When Murray Grainger took over as Head of Information Services at Elizabeth Finn Care it quickly became clear that centralisation of the IT infrastructure was the key to future success. “We had multiple sites including the care homes, administration offices and people working remotely from home,” said Murray. “With no technical expertise at the 11 different sites it was obvious to me that we needed a simple, centralised IT infrastructure that was easy to manage.” Centralising the IT infrastructure also made sense for the upgrade of the resident record system at the care homes, which was the central repository for carers to record essential information on residents at the homes.

Butler Group Technology Report
IGEL Technology, one of the world’s top five thin client vendors, has delivered a new range of Universal Desktop devices. Its thin client devices are aimed at small, medium, and large organisations across all verticals and address both the issues associated with traditional PCs, and the opportunities offered by digital services and desktop virtualisation. IGEL’s new Universal Desktop devices and Universal Management Suite offer a good range of hardware functionality and management controls, supporting the full spectrum of digital services using a variety of connection methods. Of particular note is IGEL’s introduction of a Universal Firmware Concept, whereby just one firmware image per operating system is available across all hardware platforms and Entry, Standard, and Advanced digital service ‘packs’ can be unlocked during manufacture. In Butler Group’s opinion, IGEL’s solution would benefit any organisation that wants to reduce its power consumption (and associated carbon footprint), consolidate desktop devices (remove the need for telephones, for example), and reduce the overall management overhead of desktop device provision.
