Convergence: The Foundation for Unified Communications

Unified Communications – Anticipation and Reality

The benefits of Unified Communications (UC) have been touted with enthusiasm for quite some

time. By integrating disparate communications systems, media, devices and applications, UC

promises to free up time, increase productivity, streamline communication channels, and

provide better customer experiences. The widespread use of UC applications for collaboration,

telecommuting, presence, automated call centers and automated business operations have

only begun to materialize, however.

Convergence, on the other hand, has generated proven results and tangible cost savings for

several years running. Convergence is essentially the implementation of and migration to IP

telephony (IPT) systems that eliminate costly non‐digital PBX equipment. It helps to think of

convergence as the network architecture that will be required for UC, and, conversely, UC as

the set of applications that need a converged infrastructure to perform efficiently. Voice over IP

(VoIP) is the most commonly understood converged application. With UC ‐‐ VoIP, data and

video traffic use the same transport infrastructure (where voice is simply digital data that is

routed across the network). Other applications could include unified messaging; presenceaware

communications systems; integrated collaboration with office software tools; video

conferencing; and more.

Why IP Convergence Hit Its Stride with the Early Majority

IP Convergence - once just a buzzword – has effectively been “field proven” and now is considered a strategic component of most businesses’ cost optimization efforts and has become a mainstay of business vernacular. In this paper, "Why IP Convergence Hit Its Stride with the Early Majority," we share the evolution and present the reasons behind why IP Convergence technologies are the clear choice for enterprises who want to gain a competitive edge in their markets.

Finding Customer Value at the Intersection

A white paper authored by David Vorhaus, Senior Analyst, Yankee Group. As enterprises publish and distribute more an d more high-value and high-volume content on-line, the need for a dedicated content delivery network (CDN) continues to crystallize. This white paper highlights the advantages of a carrier-CDN partnership from an enterprise perspective, while also describing the competitive drivers that have created new opportunities for enterprises to rethink their CDN strategy and seek an external CDN solution.

New Opportunities and Challenges in a Shrinking World

E 1 xtraordinary networking advancements are creating a new information era. Enterprises are confronting a whole new set of challenges in the web 2.0 economy. The old boundaries of voice and data networks, distance and geography have been erased. Regardless of how you describe today’s global business environment – a “flat world” or a “shrinking planet” – globalization 2.0 is upon us and information communications technologies (ICT) have never been a more critical enabler of enterprise competitiveness.
