London Borough of Redbridge

Scalable and flexible WAN Optimisation helps council take charge of their network.

Redbridge is an outer London borough in the northeast of London. Located close to the Thames Gateway and the London 2012 Olympic site, Redbridge is home to more than a quarter of a million people.

Widely recognised for its efficiencies and delivering high quality services, the London Borough of Redbridge Council is building a reputation for innovation, characterised through its award winning website, Redbridge-i. Employing over 3,500 staff located at a number of sites across the borough, the authority has implemented flexible working practices to provide greater flexibility and agility, helping to underpin service delivery.

With the growth in use of internet based critical business applications to support efficient working practices, the authority required more accurate monitoring and management of its available bandwidth for both outbound and inbound traffic. As a trusted partner to the authority, Imerja was engaged to identify and recommend an efficient, cost effective and scalable option to its existing Packateer solution. Following an evaluation exercise, the authority chose to deploy WAN optimisation technology from Exinda Networks to provide greater visibility and control over bandwidth usage, helping ensure critical services are delivered more efficiently across the organisation.

The solution was implemented by Imerja, an Exinda Gold partner, and included two Exinda 4700 appliances deployed on separate existing internet connections. The authority realised immediate improvements to network performance; being able to monitor and shape the traffic and implement policies on social usage ensured that critical applications were available and efficient at all times. The scalable nature of the solution also provided the authority with a clear upgrade path moving forward.

As a result of this initial implementation and the performance improvements that the Exinda solution has already provided the authority, it has recently upgraded to the new Exinda 6760 appliance. With 1GB throughput and enhanced Application Response Measurement technology, this new solution will help the authority to accurately quantify and report on application response times from a user’s perspective at remote sites, providing even greater visibility and control over network optimisation and application acceleration across the WAN.

With a strong working partnership in place, Imerja provides Redbridge with a proactive monitoring and managed service across its network infrastructure, including the Exinda optimisation solution, helping to ensure its users and citizens receive a high quality of service at all times.

“Imerja remains a valuable partner to the Council and has been instrumental in the Exinda implementation. The solution has helped us control and monitor internet traffic ensuring optimum availability for users when on the network.”

VoIP Unlimited

Unlimited Opportunities with VoIP

VoIP Unlimited was established in the UK in February 2006 to assist IT and telephony dealers in introducing business level Voice over IP (VoIP) services to their SME customers. VoIP Unlimited is a wholesale specialist Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunk provider and supplies SIP breakout to IT and VoIP PBX resellers.

The company had identified significant revenue opportunities for IT and telephony dealers to expand the range of IP services to their customer base. The expanded services would allow dealers to gain recurring revenue streams and vastly reduce customer churn.

In order to maximize revenue opportunities, the company needed to find a way to overcome one of the drawbacks of VoIP: the problem of voice delays. They looked at various solutions on the market and selected the Exinda 4700 WAN optimization solution. Additional features on the Exinda appliance including the ability to provide detailed reporting of the SIP voice calls were requested, implemented and tested to ensure it would meet all the requirements of VoIP Unlimited’s customers.

R&R Gains Visibility and Control over its MPLS Network with Exinda

Microsoft® Active Directory Integration Provides Deep Insight into R&R’s Microsoft Environment

About R&R
R&R Ice Cream is Europe’s largest ice cream manufacturer for take home products. With production plants in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Poland, R&R makes a wide range of ice cream treats under popular brands such as FAB, Smarties, After Eight, Rolo and Skinny Cow. Although the company’s roots go back to 1932, today R&R is a modern multinational organization with a commitment to leading-edge technology.

The Challenge
Early in 2007, R&R implemented a new MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) network with the goal of increasing the performance and reliability of the communication links between its facilities. This initiative went hand in hand with a merger that expanded R&R’s sites.

While MPLS would speed up traffic flow, R&R recognized that lack of visibility would be a downside.
“Previously, to accommodate another merger, we had implemented a small MPLS network to join five sites in the UK,” explains Jonathan Aldred, Group IT Infrastructure Manager, R&R. “We experienced issues with bandwidth congestion and had no visibility into what was causing the problem.”

The saturated links affected the clarity of voice communications and employees routinely complained of long wait times for file copies and to access Web-based applications and the Internet.

“To make the most of our MPLS investments, we knew we needed a solution that would give us visibility and control over network traffic,” states Aldred.

A Smarter Approach to WAN Optimisation

Executive Summary

Organizations rely heavily upon their network and applications to drive day-to-day operations and support employees and customers. With more remote and mobile users dependent on the wide area network (WAN) and more Web-based applications coming online every day, the amount of traffic crossing organizations’ networks is growing exponentially. When bandwidth congestion and network issues are allowed to impede the performance of critical applications, productivity suffers and the entire organization may be put at risk.

Network managers and administrators face the daunting task of effectively monitoring and managing network resources and bandwidth while meeting user expectations for consistently fast access to applications running on the WAN. At the same time, most IT departments also have the mandate to reduce operating costs and do more with less.

This white paper will demonstrate how organizations can overcome these challenges by implementing a Unified Performance Management (UPM) solution that addresses the three key requirements of application performance management: visibility, control and optimization. Unified Performance Management evolved from the concept of Unified Threat Management, or UTM, which describes a network firewall solution that incorporates many advanced features in a single box including e-mail spam filtering, anti-virus capabilities, intrusion detection and content filtering.

With Unified Performance Management, the core capabilities needed to effectively manage the WAN and ensure optimal application performance are incorporated into a single network appliance. These capabilities include real-time monitoring, reporting, traffic control, optimization and acceleration – all integrated and accessible through a common interface and centralized management platform.

By providing a comprehensive solution for improving application performance, Unified Performance Management can positively impact the bottom line. UPM enables organizations to lower network operating costs, defer expensive bandwidth upgrades and increase productivity by reducing the time employees spend waiting for slow applications to respond. In customer-facing situations, UPM helps ensure customer loyalty and profitability by delivering the reliable access to online applications and services needed to attract and retain customers.

Exinda Service Delivery Point

Cloud-based Appliance Management and Provisioning

Exinda Service Delivery Point

Gain greater network visibility, control, and optimization while reducing costs and management time. Designed for enterprise network environments looking to centrally manage multi-box Exinda deployments. The Exinda Service Delivery Point is available as Cloud Services/SaaS model or as a server to be housed at the location of your choosing.

The Challenge

Managing WAN Optimization appliances deployed throughout growing corporate networks can be complicated. Traditional centralized management systems are often fraught with prolonged implementations, high failure rates and high costs. IT managers are challenged by need to avoid these common pitfalls while ensuring the highest level of performance for their users.

The Solution

Exinda’s Service Delivery Point (SDP) is a revolutionary platform for centrally managing Exinda appliances distributed throughout the corporate network. As a hosted service, SDP further simplifies the task of installing, configuring, monitoring and reporting WAN optimization appliances.

The SDP offering is one of Exinda’s key differentiators in the Traffic Shaping & WAN optimization space. A fundamental component of Exinda’s Unified Performance Management solution, it rounds out the Exinda product line and makes it the most comprehensive and effective solution for achieving peak application performance.

With secure access via a Web browser, SDP subscribers gain full visibility into network usage and control over applications at any WAN site. SDP helps IT managers to identify and control the underlying causes of poor network performance whether it be unwanted recreational peer-to-peer traffic or a misconfigured server.

Custom reports provide a granular analysis of network usage, top applications and top URLs. This information is critical in setting an optimal network policy, throttling back applications and for future capacity planning. Exinda’s solution focuses on network usage at application Layer 7 while most other competitive solutions focus on network Layer 3. Layer 3 management cannot differentiate between mission critical applications and unwanted recreational applications such as Skype and social networking applications. Reports can be tailored for individual appliance, region wide appliances or corporate wide.

Exinda’s SDP is the industry’s first software-as-a-service for centrally managing WAN optimization appliances. SDP offers significant advantages over traditional centralized management systems by eliminating the need to buy, install, maintain and upgrade management hardware and software. From a cost perspective, SDP requires no capital investment and has no hidden costs. In fact, it offers a 70-90 percent cost saving compared to competitive systems.

Controlling Peer-to-Peer and Recreational Internet Traffic

Executive Summary

Recreational use of the Internet at work has far reaching implications for employers in both the private and public sector. Recreational Internet traffic is defined as any type of traffic on the network that is neither directly nor indirectly related to line of business activities. Today’s networks are inundated with ever-increasing volumes of recreational traffic generated by peer-to-peer (P2P) file downloads, access to broadband media via sites like YouTube, and repeated visits to popular social networking sites like Facebook®, MySpace and LinkedIn.

Beyond the cost of employees not doing their work, recreational Internet applications drive enormous volumes of traffic over organizations’ Internet links. This high volume of traffic increases communication and network operating costs by forcing organizations to upgrade their bandwidth and invest in high capacity WAN. Recreational Internet traffic also increases congestion and competes with legitimate business applications for available bandwidth, creating delays, frustration and lost productivity when employees need to access business applications on the network.

Organizations’ networks, already strained to the limit supporting business-critical Web-based applications, are increasingly vulnerable to the adverse effects of recreational traffic. A single bandwidth-hogging employee downloading illegal movies using a P2P application may result in the entire branch office workforce suffering from slow access to their CRM application.Recreational traffic is not merely an IT issue. When we talk about application performance, we’re really talking about employee efficiency and overall business performance.

Aside from application delivery and cost issues, organizations may also face moral and legal imperatives to control recreational traffic due its questionable content. The network is an important asset that should not be used for delivering illegal or inappropriate content such aspornography or content that violates copyright laws.

This paper will discuss strategies for controlling a broad range of recreational Internet traffic such as instant messaging, P2P file downloads and social networking activities that can significantly slow business applications and impact employee productivity. By implementing a solution to effectively detect, classify and control recreational traffic, including encrypted P2P traffic designed to slip past corporate firewalls, organizations can improve employee productivity, accelerate application response times, reclaim bandwidth for business-critical applications and defer costly bandwidth upgrades.
