Anixter Union Square
Opened in October 2009, Union Square is a stunning shopping and entertainment destination in the heart of Aberdeen. Built by Hammerson plc at a cost of more than £250 million, it combines new architecture with the train station’s early 20th century façade. The result is a development that has regenerated this area of the city while respecting the heritage that the site represents. Union Square boasts of more than 60 stores and restaurants, a 10-screen cinema and a 203-bedroom hotel right in the centre of Aberdeen.
Program Scope
With security vital to such a prominent building, the customer made the decision to use and source best-of-breed products from the market-leading partnerships of Anixter. S2, Axis and Milestone’s technical expertise and quality products were key to delivering the solution.
NG Bailey, the project’s building services and systems provider, used Anixter’s value-added READY!SM Deployment Services to complete the installation on time. As a unique offering in the marketplace, Anixter’s READY! Deployment Services simplify materials management at the job site by linking deliveries to the specific phases of an infrastructure build-out.
For this project, Anixter preconfigured the IP addresses, conducted DOA checks, and powered up and tested just shy of 200 Axis IP cameras. All external cameras were housed in anti-vandal, IP66-rated housing in a state-of-the-art warehouse. This minimised the amount of packaging on site thus reducing the cost of delivery and lowering the carbon footprint of the Aberdeen shipping centre.
Customer Benefits
The high-end, fully integrated IP camera and access control products provided a complete system that the customer and the general public can rely on to handle their important IP video. Because of the camera coverage of the centre, the shopping centre can now offer a child safety scheme, which reunites parents with lost children as quickly as possible.
Through its READY! Deployment Service, Anixter added significant value to the project, and its logistics capabilities were key to successfully completing the job. Anixter utilised its sourcing, storage and deployment capabilities to satisfy stringent contract stipulations such as scheduled access times, specific off-loading facilities, restrictions of cable cutting on site and a strict deployment schedule. As a result of this project’s success, Anixter and NG Bailey are in the process of specifying and designing larger projects, which will continue to demonstrate Anixter’s successful manufacturer partnerships and its ability to complete large-scale projects.
