WHY CLOUD?
/ What on earth is The Cloud?
Cloud computing has thrown traditional IT infrastructures out of the window. Literally. Gone are servers and server rooms requiring vast amounts of energy to power them – and cool them. Gone too is the requirement to buy enterprise software and install it and upgrade it. And the need to invest in, service and maintain a legion of similarly configured desktops and laptops.
Instead, applications and data are delivered through an Internet connection to any PC or laptop. Users simply turn and start work, with all of the infrastructure required to deliver applications and process data delivered remotely.
/ Isn't Cloud Computing just a new term for SaaS?
Software as a Service has been around for a while – and deservedly so. Rather than buying software, it is leased on a per user basis, the application accessed through an Internet connection. It still leaves, however, the physical IT infrastructure in place. Cloud Computing removes the need for the hardware as well as the software.
/ Is Cloud Computing restricted to enterprises?
They wish. Cloud Computing delivers the advantages of enterprise computing to any user, regardless of their size, making it a very attractive proposition to SMBs. So much so that, according to research conducted by OpinionMatters and published in January 2010, half of UK SMBs plan to use Cloud Computing in 2010. That's more than double the figure for 2009, with another quarter of respondents planning to move to Cloud Computing within the next 5 years.
/ What technologies are connected with Cloud Computing?
Cloud Computing is a big step for any company, enterprise or organisation to undertake. If you are considering it, you'll probably also be thinking how it will impact your Wireless strategy, and whether Virtualisation comes into the picture. IP EXPO gives you the chance to find out by following the links below.
/ What are the advantages of Cloud Computing?
- Cost savings – the biggest and most often cited reason for considering Cloud Computing is cost. In any company or enterprise, there are ongoing costs for installing, configuring, upgrading and maintaining the IT infrastructure. Cloud Computing replaces capital and ongoing costs with a fixed monthly fee, typically of around one fifth of the current amount.
- Remote working – one of the biggest IT challenges facing companies and enterprises is how to deliver applications and data remotely. Cloud Computing does so permanently and securely.
- Efficiency – companies and organisations that adopt Cloud Computing work more efficiently because the task of maintaining and servicing an often complicated IT infrastructure is removed, leaving them to concentrate on their core business.
- Flexibility – no company or business can predict the future. Cloud Computing brings flexibility to applications which can be turned on and off as required, making their cost a direct reflection of their value to the business.
